Wim Wabbes – music director Arts Centre Vooruit, Gent
Bologna Estate – Gent
The music programme of Bologna Estate – Gent is organized by Arts Centre Vooruit (with the support of the City of Gent and the City of Bologna).
Vooruit (www.vooruit.be) is one of the mayor Cultural Institutions of Belgium. We have  very beautiful old building –built in 1913 – that has 5 halls with a total capacity of 3600 people. In this building we organize concerts, performances, exhibitions, events, festivals all year through. We also have 5 rehearsal studios in which artists can prepare their productions and present them in Vooruit. In total we present more than 500 activities a year and have an audience  of 150.000 people visiting Vooruit.
For the music programme we present at Bologna Estate – Botanique we decided to invite 4 music groups which will not only present their own programme but will be working together amongst themselves and with musicians from Bologna.
The musicians that will play at Bologna Estate Botanique are a beautiful example of the richness of the music scene of Ghent. The musicians that will perform this Thursday till Saturday come from different musical areas –rock, pop, jazz, improvised and the traditional music scene. Some of them are stars in Belgium –like Gabriel Rios and An Pierlé who are mayor rock artists in our country (and internationally) or have already a long and exciting career like Dick Van der Harst – who was invited by the city as their official composer.. But we invited also the youngest generation of very promising musicians such as Fulco Ottervanger of the amazing jazz group De Beren Gieren and Lander Gyselinck who is brilliant drummer.
Though these musicians perform in different musical genres they have worked together during these past few days here in Bologna and prepared some new musical projects. They  have and will also work together with musicians from Bologna : vocalist Cristina Zavalloni, Saxofonist Edoardo Marrafa and electronic musician (but also sax, bass clarinet) Diego Cofone.
The new projects will be presented in what we call the Frizzante sessions/ the Sparkling Sessions – short strong musical moments of 20 minutes that will be  presented before the main act each night.
It is very exciting for the musicians of Ghent to be in Bologna and work here . To flavor the city and being able to work with local musicians and share new ideas. It is funny, but some of these musicians have never worked together in Gent and some have actually met for the first time in Bologna. You need this Bologna experience to make new things happen. It is very important and it is a beautiful way to show the importance of Unesco Creative City of Music- collaborations such as this one. I would like to thank the city of Bologna for giving us the opportunity to present this project and being able to work during a week in this marvelous city

Exciting music from Ghent – Unesco Creative City of Music
Bologna and Gent have a lot in common. Both cities have almost the same size and are rich historical cities with a vibrant cultural life. Both are student cities (Gent has 60.000 students). And there is more.
Ghent has a very vivid music scene . There are numerous clubs, concert venues and festivals where music of all kinds is presented ranging from classical over pop, rock, … to jazz, world music and experimental.
Recently the city was rewarded the UNESCO title of ‘Ghent – UNESCO Creative of City of Music’ – a prestigious title Ghent shares with only 3 other cities in the world.
One of them is Bologna (another thing we share) – that is why Bologna Estate presents a programme with some of the best music from Ghent.

Each night you can hear a band play at 22:00h. Before they go on we present you the Frizzante/sparkling sessions – short surprising concerts of 20 minutes – songs, instrumental miniatures, weird outbursts of sound,…involving musicians from Ghent, but also inviting musicians from Bologna such as Cristina Zavalloni,  Edoardo Marraffa, Diego Cofone.

Is one of the best known rock musicians of Belgium. He has Puerto Rican roots and divides his time between Gent and New York. With his band he has played all the mayor festivals of the country. Apart from being an incredible songwriter, he also has a great voice and is  wonderful guitar player.  He is an adventurous musician that loves to experiment with other genres. For example he released an amazing album with jazz pianist Jef Neve. Gabriel Rios will be performing his songs in different settings

22:00 De Beren Gieren (Bears & Vultures)
Is a young jazz piano trio lead by the magnificent Fulco Ottervanger. You should not think too traditional, this is a band of three virtuoso players who toy with music. Their music travels from jazz to other musical traditions and back. Very playful, full of wit and humor. They swing but in their very own particular way.
